Seeking to encourage talented people to enter the translation field, JAT is pleased to announce its eighth annual Japanese-to-English translation contest for new and aspiring translators. The actual passage to be translated is a real-life text—the sort of thing a working commercial translator might well be called upon to do.

Open to:

Anyone with less than three years’ experience as a professional translator

• 2012 June 2-3: Winners attend IJET-23 in Hiroshima

All entries will be reviewed and judged by experienced professional translators. All decisions are final. All entries become the property of JAT.

I'm very grateful to the organizers of the JAT translation contest.

I entered the contest twice as a translation student. The first year I entered, I did not place, but the detailed analysis posted of the winning translations taught me a lot, and brought my attention to aspects of translating the type of document in question that I had not previously been aware of. I applied what I had learned when I entered the contest again the next year. That year, too, the detailed feedback from the judges on my translation was very informative, and pointed out a lot of areas for improvement. Both years, the experience of valuable and taught me a lot! I think the standards for critiquing the entries are high, and I really appreciate that such experienced and skilled translators contribute their time to help newer translators refine their skills. I often recommend the contest to translators who are new to the game.

課題の内容や量も取り組みやすいものだったと思います。

審査員の方々の評価コメントは厳しいですがありがたいものでした。訳出した日本語の不自然な部分を指摘していただき、あらためて、自分勝手な訳にならぬよう注意しなければと思いました。他にも反省点が多々あり、良い勉強になりました。

数年前、家でできる仕事として、翻訳家になることを考えていました。それまでも英語と日本語を使った仕事をしていましたが、公式に翻訳の仕事をしたことはありませんでした。JATの新人翻訳コンテストには、自分に翻訳の仕事をするだけの語学力があるのかどうかを確かめたくて、挑戦させていただきました。コンテストでの受賞は、翻訳家として仕事を始めるにあたって、自分の翻訳能力にある程度の自信を持つことができたという点で、プラスでした。

審査員の方から"lonely hours with companionship"の訳し方についてコメントをいただき、なるほどと思ったことを今でも覚えています。2位をいただいたので、1位の方の訳と比べて自分の訳に何が足りなかったのかということについては少し興味がありましたが、お忙しい中、審査をしてくださった方々にそこまで求めるのは無理であることは承知しております。

●応募の動機

　 偶然だったのですが、「課題文」という語句は英語でどう表現するのかインターネットで調べていて、JATコンテストの募集要項がヒットしました。その時点で締切まで10日ぐらいの余裕があったこと、実際にテキストを読んで、好きな動物に関する内容だったので、訳してみたいという気持ちが強くあったことが応募の動機です。

前回のコンテストは私にとって「日本語との闘い」でした。意味は分かるものの自然な日本語にできない文がたくさんあり、推敲には翻訳の数倍の時 間が必要でした。おそらく今回の課題文も、英語力と同時に皆さんの「日本語力」が試されると思いますので、その覚悟で取り組んでください。

 

例えば、英語では1語の動詞でも、日本語では動詞＋副詞とした方が自然になる、あるいはその逆という具合に、異言語ですから当然ズレがあります。その解決のヒントをくれるのが英英辞典です。英和辞典ではどうしてもそこにある訳語に引きずられて自由な発想が妨げられるということが、この課題に取り組んだことで身にしみて分かりました。

さらに、事実関係を間違いなく捉えた上で、自分が最初から日本語でこの事実を表現するとしたらどうなるかを考えて、英語から導き出した訳文と比較する視点も必要だと思います。

副賞としてご招待いただきましたIJET17ですが、これは本当に素晴らしい体験でした。ベテラン翻訳者さんが国内外から多数参加されるとのことで、話についていけるか不安がありましたが、私のような駆け出しにとっても次の日からすぐ実行できる仕事上のヒントが数多くあり、参加できて本当によかったと思います。

コンテストとIJETがきっかけとなって、遅まきながらチェッカーから翻訳者への展望が開け、のんびりしていた生活に喝を入れることができました。翻訳の仕事は自分から動かなければ広がらないものですが、「要経験」の壁に阻まれがちな新人翻訳者にはこうしたコンテストの場が貴重なチャンスになると思います。ぜひがんばってください。
