Time for a lovely JAT hike and picnic in Kamakura!
TAC is experimenting with some new event ideas. Thanks to JAT President, Marian Kinoshita, we are offering an outdoor activity in October.
When: Saturday, October 24, 2015 (Rain date: TBA)
Where: from JR Kita Kamakura Station to JR Kamakura Station along the Kamakura Ten-en Hiking Course
Time: 10AM to about 2PM
Registration is required: Please email [email protected] by Saturday, October 10th (JST)
Limited to JAT members and their families (8 years or older)
Fee: There is no fee to participate, but an entrance fee for Kenchoji Temple (300 yen) will be required. You will also need to pay for your own food and transport.
Schedule:
10:00 Meet at Kita Kamakura Station, in front of Engakuji Temple
10:15 Arrive at Kenchoji Temple (300 yen fee required), enjoy leisurely walk around temple grounds, use lovely toilets!
11:00 Start hiking from Kenchoji Temple (Warning: the trail starts off with a long set of steep stairs, but then turns into a hilly path, providing an invigorating hike. Not an easy walk in the park, but not tricky mountain climbing!)
12:00 noon (or so) stop for picnic lunch at top of Mt Ohirayama
12:30 Start hiking to Zuisenji Temple
13:30 Walk from Zuisenji Temple to Kamakura-gu Shrine
14:00 Arrive at Kamakura Station
Once we reach Zuisenji Temple, the hiking part is basically over, and everyone is free to do their own thing - walk or take a bus directly to Kamakura Station and go home, visit various temples/shrines/shops/cafes while walking back to the station, jump on Enoden and head toward the Great Buddha or the beach, join a Zen monastery, or whatever tickles your fancy!
Here is a good description of the hike:

What to wear:
Comfortable walking shoes (sneakers or hiking boots)
Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are best, as it may be hot and/or cool)
Hat - quite easy to get sunburned even in the woods!
What to bring:
Water - but don’t worry, there are a few vending machines along the way
Rain gear - just in case
Lunch - Note! There are no convenience stores near Kita Kamakura station, so please pack your own lunch or pick something up before you arrive. (There are, on the other hand, plenty of places to enjoy treats, both savory and sweet, once we get close to Kamakura Station!)
Backpack - to carry your water/lunch/stuff
Cell phone – Let us know your number, just in case..
Prior to the event, we will send out a reminder to those who have registered, which will include a TAC member’s mobile number for last-minute contact.
