Background

I have more than two decades of practical experience working in the corporate sector in Japan in a bilingual environment, including nearly a decade working directly with the manufacturers in their own offices. I also have extensive experience in translating and authoring documentation for system development and planning of medium-to-large-scale projects.

My previous and current clients over the years range the gamut from companies in the automotive sector such as Toyota Motor Corporation, Volkswagen Group Japan and Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.; to electronics manufacturers such as Denso Corporation, Maspro Denkoh Corp. and Welcat Inc.; and clients as diverse as Chubu Centrair International Airport, Kyoto University and Yamaha Corporation. (Most of these projects were done via agencies.)

I'm originally from Denver, Colorado in the United States, and have studied and worked in the music industry in Los Angeles before coming to Japan in 1993. I've also studied graphic design for four years with Sessions Design College in New York. I hold a level 1 certification (the highest level) in the "Japanese-Language Proficiency Test" (http://www.jlpt.jp/e/), and a level 3 certification in the "Kanji-Kentei" (http://www.kanken.or.jp/kanken) Kanji proficiency examination.

My native language is English (U.S.), but I work in close cooperation with highly experienced native Japanese translators to offer E-to-J translation services as well.

My current freelancing business is Chapman Creative Works in Iwakura city, Aichi prefecture. I offer linguistic services including translation, proofreading and editing, Web project support, music production services and one-on-one lessons. Although my business is more than a full-time job, I also enjoy cycling, playing the piano, writing and recording music... not to mention a good soak in the hot springs when the opportunity presents itself!

NOTE: If you are looking for an interpreter, please keep in mind that I am located in Aichi prefecture and will require travel expenses for on-site interpreting. Thank you for your consideration!
