About the seminar
Employment rules can be a convenient entry point to legal translation for
the layperson. Provisions are short and often use simple grammar. And the
subject matter seems familiar. What is more, demand is increasing as
Japanese companies source staff from more diverse backgrounds, and more
foreign entities set up in Japan. This two-hour workshop will focus on
establishing good basic skills in approaching employment rules that can be
applied later to a range of other legal documents. We will look at
principles, structure, vocabulary and resources before trying our hand at
translating common provisions.
About the speaker
Carol Lawson is legally-qualified and holds postgraduate qualifications in
both translation and Japanese law. Her legal translation consultancy, Legal
Communications Japan, focuses on translating Japanese legal documents into
plain legal English, and she has a special interest in legal translation for
large institutions. Carol also teaches Japanese to English legal translation
in the Masters in Japanese Interpreting and Translating (MAJIT) at the
University of Queensland. She is currently working with a social insurance
labour consultant (社会保険労務士) to co-author a book on English-language
employment rules for Japanese companies.
