"Yokai 101 - Meet the Yokai
Speaker: Matthew Alt

Outline
As the late-summer spook season winds down, join us for "Yokai 101" -- an introduction to the things that go bump in Japan's night. The co-author of "Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide" will guide you through a light-hearted exploration of these strange creatures from folklore -- many of whom you may be more familiar with than you realize. You'll learn to differentiate among various creepie-crawlies, including not only the yokai but oni, yurei, and more, while getting a handle on some techniques to help you survive potential encounters. After establishing the cultural context and modern-day relevancy of these sometimes charming, sometimes terrifying goblins, we will move into a discussion of some of the linguistic issues inherent to "yokai studies" (such as it is!)
