医薬品開発-承認申請-市販後業務のための知っておきたい英単語・英語表現 is now in its second edition. Written by Takemi Uchida, formerly an in-house translator with pharma companies Upjohn and Pfizer before retiring to become a freelance translator, this book dovetails nicely with his other publication, the handy 医薬品開発部員のための和英/英和・翻訳辞典.

Well-laid-out in two-column pages and featuring boxed information where emphasis is required, and with easy-to-read print in black and shades of blue (used primarily for Japanese text, but also for highlighting in the corresponding English text), this book is ideal for the translator beginning a career in the medical and pharma sector, or even translators making their way in the sciences. More-experienced pharma translators will probably get less out of this book, but teachers of pharma translation will certainly find the example sentences and classification system both relevant and useful. An index would have been more convenient, but the table of contents is comprehensive and easy to navigate.

The book is divided into six chapters as follows.

Chapter 1. 通信文を書くための正しい知識

A set of sample English sentences for email and other communications that are relevant to medical and pharma translation, including handy sentence fragments for opening and closing communications, and for requesting, informing and reminding.

Chapter 2. 医薬品開発・臨床報告等で使われる英単語・英語表現

Accounting for more than half of the book, this chapter provides abundant example sentences in English with their Japanese equivalents, classified logically and helpfully, as follows.

Verbs used in association with adverse events, diseases, and symptoms. Sentences containing the following terms: dose, dosage, dose level; statistical significance; report; problem; not known; exacerbated; efficacy and effectiveness; recovery; causality; concomitant use; action or effect; tolerability; single and multiple doses; discontinuation; treatment; indications and other package insert terms; assignment and other expressions used in protocols; and improvement. English verbs corresponding to 検討する; English verbs and phrases corresponding to 明らかになった; English verbs corresponding to 認める; and English verbs corresponding to 伴うand 合併.

Chapter 3. 間違いやすい英単語の正しい使い方

This chapter provides guidance on the correct use of around fifty commonly-misused English words, such as awaiting, diagnose, discuss, occur, overseas, presentation, recover, suggest, therefore, and under.

Chapter 4. 類語の使い分け

A short chapter on distinguishing the following pairs: except and except for, during and for, serious and severe, patient and case, and lack and absence.

Chapter5. 英文を書くための正しい知識

Another meaty section including numerous examples of sentences on topics such as the following: the difference between shall and should; translating に従って; translating 予想する and synonyms; translating 確認するand 承認する; correct punctuation; expressions corresponding to more and less; expressing doubt; and the old chestnuts, 考えられる and 表す.

Chapter 6. その他の役立つ表現・略語表

This chapter provides some handy phrases for the following: expressions used in self-introductions, seasonal greetings, and congratulatory messages. It also includes some useful terms associated with clinical trials, and a table of common pharma abbreviations.
