CAT tools and translation memory are powerful tools that provide translators with reassuring assistance in their work.
With the help of JATTOOLS, TRAC has invited speakers up to Sendai to introduce you to three of the leading CAT tools: Trados, Felix and Wordfast. The first half will feature an overview of the basic characteristics and features of each tool, while the second half will let participants get more hands on and try out the tools for themselves in more of a workshop setting. All levels of users are welcome, whether this will be your first foray into translation memory or you are contemplating a switchover to a new tool. We highly encourage all participants to bring their own laptops, preloading them with full or trial versions of the CAT tools of their choice. Trados: Etsuko Matsuura
Freelance translator from Saitama. Before going freelance, Etsuko worked as a technical translator for a precision equipment manufacturer, technical writer, and localizer for a systems development company, then followed her husband to the US due to a job relocation. She started her freelance career focusing on IT and technical translations, but more recently has branched out to include more general English-Japanese translation, such as corporate websites, blogs, press releases and webinar narrations. In warmer seasons, Etsuko frequents the Urawa-Misono area. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, quilting and playing with her two dogs.
Felix: Ben Tompkins
Ben lives in beautiful Fukuoka, Japan, where he began translating professionally in 1994. Ben specializes in pharmaceutical and biomedical translation. He owns Tompkins Biomedical Communications K.K., a provider of translation and other language services to pharmaceutical companies, research organizations, and universities. Ben serves as Vice President of the Japan Association of Translators (JAT) and has helped organize three IJET conferences in and outside Japan. He can be reached at [email protected].
Wordfast: Megumi Kimoto
Megumi Kimoto is an English-Japanese translator of nearly 30 years based in Yokohama and a director of the Japan Association of Translators (JAT). She specializes in the fields of banking, securities, and insurance. Her client base has been shifting abroad; her latest work came from an accounting firm, translation agencies, a venture firm, and a fund management firm in the U.S., the U.K., France, and Australia. She also benefits from her membership in JAT as some of her colleagues send work her way. Megumi also teaches translation at ISS Institute in Tokyo. In order to enhance efficiency, she has been using Cross Language’s PC-Transer for several years. She purchased WordFast in April of this year and is acclimating herself to its basic functions with the generous help of fellow JAT members.
Trados and Wordfast presentations will be given in Japanese; Felix presentation will be given in English.
