About the Speaker:
Hello, I am Roppyaku Tsurumi, and I am an English to Japanese game translator. I previously helped produce and localize the Japanese versions of both “Crash Bandicoot” and the “Ratchet and Clank” series under SCE (then SIE), and I now work as a freelance game translator.
I began my career as an arcade game developer (planner) for Sega, and since then I have delved into internal development, external production, and game localization (E<>J) for a wide number of games, ranging from AAA titles to indie games. It is perhaps this unique background of mine that causes me to always consider development systems and workflows while translating, and it is also the reason why I am always conscious of the developer’s intent as I contemplate introducing games into the Japanese market. It is for this reason that I know these things cannot be “just translated”; they need to be “localized.”
I’m excited to participate in this opportunity to discuss what it takes to localize with all of the above in mind whilst ensuring the players enjoy the game.
I’ve also been getting a lot more work in the field of dubbing translation, so it would be great to touch on localization tips for bringing your characters to life.
I look forward to all your questions.
