For the interpreting lecture in the morning, Ms. Denise Fisher, freelance interpreter and translator based in Columbus (OH), will teach you what the professional interpreters do differently from a novice and what you can do to improve your skills. (Note that this presentation is a rerun of September 2018 Japanese Automotive Translation and Interpreting Seminar). During the interpreting workshop, you will have the opportunity to apply what you learned in the lecture and receive feedback from your peers.
In the afternoon, Dr. Jim Davis, Professor and Director of the Technical Japanese Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will lead the translation workshop where the participants will have the opportunity to compare translation results. (The passage will be emailed to you prior to the event.) Translating the passage beforehand is not a requirement but you will retain more by doing so—even if it is just a few lines. There will be a presentation about potential translation problems regarding self-driving cars and explain how one could tackle these problems.
