Coronavirus Crisis and the Translation Profession: The Reality on the Ground, Strategies for Success, and Future Outlook

The novel coronavirus pandemic is not only affecting our daily lives but also our current and future working environment. Three JAT translators and interpreters will share their views on the current situation, discuss their experiences, and suggest how to turn the challenges we face into opportunities. Tune in to this panel discussion with your fellow translators and interpreters around the world to learn how the crisis is affecting your colleagues and to pick up some tips for coping with the crisis now and into the future. (This session will be delivered in English and Japanese (depending on the native language of the speaker).)

---
There will be an online networking session (14:00-15:00 JST) at the conclusion of Online PROJECT 2020. Simply register for Session 8 to join in, whether or not you’re able to participate in Session 8.

Panelists:

Alex Farrell:
Alex is a Kyoto-based translator originally hailing from Austin, Texas. After a five-year stint teaching English, he made the jump to freelance translation 13 years ago and hasn't looked back since. He considers himself a 何でも屋さん (with the exception of patents). Over that time, Alex has fielded inquiries from and/or gone through registration processes with – and occasionally even worked for – over 100 agencies, most of which are located in Japan.

Allyson Sigman:
Allyson is a Tokyo-based conference interpreter specializing in IT, IR, HR, and automotive manufacturing. Born and raised in the U.S., she began studying Japanese in high school through a love of drawing and animation. She did multiple study aborad trips to Japan. After earning an MA, she went to work at Japanese automotive parts manufacturer in Ohio. She worked in-house as an executive interpreter until 2017 when she went freelance. In addition to her day job, Allyson teaches an online course in interpreting for The Ohio State University. She also serves on the JAT board of directors.

Takeshi Miyahara:
Takeshi became a full-time freelance translator in 2019 after working at several companies and an educational institute, where he gained expertise in a broad range of business fields as an in-house translator-interpreter/international student advisor. Collaborating with his peer translators whom he got to know in his former jobs and some translator networking events, he offers translation services of English/German and Japanese language pairs to over 50 agencies and direct clients from all over the world. Currently serving on the JAT board of directors.
