For TRAC’s summer session, this time we’ll have Akiko Endo, linguistic freelancer extraordinaire, up to Sendai to offer up her advice on how to work from Japan with foreign translation agents.
Some of the topics that will be covered:
- The advantages of working with foreign clients, how to find them, and how to promote yourself
- Possible pitfalls to working with foreign clients and their solutions: smooth communication, time differences, etc.
- Foreign client payment practices: payment methods, timeliness, paying the right amounts, fees, fluctuating exchange rates, etc.
- Cultural differences, business practices, and things to look out for.
- Declaring taxes for foreign income
Speaker Bio:
Akiko Endo currently serves as the treasurer of the Japan Association of Translators.
After graduating from Seisen University, Ms. Endo studied at Akron University Graduate School in Ohio. She became the Director of the Berlitz School of Languages in Akron. She served as the District Director of Northern Ohio and of Upstate NY before obtaining a franchise and license to run the inlingua School of Languages in the US and Central and South America. She established and managed several schools in Florida and Central and South America under the name of “inlingua”. She also managed inlingua Translation and Interpreting Services as well as a tour operating company.
In 1989, Ms. Endo established the Japan Society of South Florida (JSSF) with a grant from the US federal government, and as the Executive Director of JSSF, she ran business and cultural programs to enhance understanding between the US and Japan. For 6 years, she was also the chief editor of Florida News, which was the only monthly publication in the Japanese language in the State of Florida.
Since returning to Japan in 2002, Ms. Endo has been a consultant, translator, and interpreter and has helped Seisen University establish an International Center.
She received training at Berlitz in consecutive and simultaneous interpretation as well as translation and has extensive experience translating in various fields and interpreting for corporations, conferences, and legal entities, including district courts and the US Federal Court.
Currently, she works as a translator and interpreter for various clients, both corporations and translation companies in Japan and overseas.
