On November 23rd, JATINT will hold a seminar in Osaka. Former JAT President Manako Ihaya who is a prominent interpreter and translator in the United States will give us tips on providing interpretation and translation services. Further she will talk about ATA translation examination from the position of ATA Japanese-into-English exam grader. Theme: Building and Running a Successful Interpretation and Translation Business in the United States
Speaker: Manako Ihaya
Former JAT President Manako Ihaya was raised and schooled in Japan and the United States, where she has settled since 1995. A graduate of Sophia University in Tokyo, she completed translation courses at Tokyo’s Simul Academy, later teaching classes there before joining The Japan Times as a staff writer/editor for The Japan Times Weekly. After moving back to California, she spent the first few years as a translator while being a stay-at-home mom to her four children. She completed UCLA Extension’s Court Interpretation course in 2004 and interprets not only in legal settings but also business, medical conference, focus group and many other situations, both as a consecutive and simultaneous interpreter. Since 1999, she has been an ATA-certified Japanese-into-English translator, serving as a certification exam grader since 2008.
Abstract:
What does it take to be a successful Japanese interpretation and translation service provider in the United States? The speaker will share her experience of building up her own business as an immigrant in the pre-Internet days to one that thrives in the age of social media, taking her all over the world and, ironically, leaving her little time to enjoy the house she was finally able to build from the results of her labors. Topics will include the preferred types of work, working for agencies v. direct clients, marketing, payment practices in the United States, and administrative work. The various types of certifications for interpreters and translators will also be discussed, including certification by the American Translators Association, for whom she is a Japanese-into-English exam grader.
