Having introduced Western-style circus to Japan, American acrobat and impresario Richard Risley Carlisle brought his Imperial Japanese Troupe to America and Europe in 1867. These visits from Japanese performers helped trigger a craze for Japanese popular culture and fan the Japonisme movement. Drawing on a wide range of primary source material, Schodt will explore this extraordinary moment of cross-cultural exchange and its ramifications. As European and American audiences ogled the Japanese, they were being ogled right back.
Speaker Profile:
Frederik L. Schodt is the author of numerous books about popular and esoteric Japanese culture, including an upcoming book about the Imperial Japanese Troupe. In 2009 he received The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his contributions to the introduction and promotion of Japanese contemporary popular culture to Western readers.
