Seminar Details:
What is required of translators varies greatly in practice, from speed to high quality. It is important to develop a habit of closely examining and carefully considering the text on a day-to-day basis, to ensure you maintain both high quality and speed.
During this workshop, using contracts and policies as a source text, we will consider how the text should be translated, the research techniques required, how to polish your translation, and what kind of translation we should be submitting to our clients.
Participants will be given a couple of short texts (in Japanese and in English) to translate prior to the workshop. Please set aside as much time as you can to translate these texts.
During the workshop, the instructor will share her views on the importance of spending time thinking about what kind of translation is desirable, and will take questions from participants as she examines the texts.
Topics to be covered:
- Common mistakes made by beginners and intermediates, and things to watch out for
- Key points for legal translation
- What is important in translation
- Notation rules
- The use of CAT tools and neural machine translation
- Explanation of the translation assignment (English-Japanese and Japanese-English)*

Instructor Profile:
Emiko Iizumi began working as a legal analyst in the legal department of a major electronics manufacturer after graduating from Keio University in Japan with a BA in law in 1986. Twelve years later, she founded JEX Limited, a provider of language services and legal translations, in Tokyo. As chief executive officer of JEX, she established an education department specializing in the training of legal translators and serves as a lecturer in their training programs. She is also a part-time lecturer at Jissen Women’s University and writes columns on legal translation for the Tsuhon Journal, a Japanese-language magazine. She spoke at the ATA’s 60th Annual Conference in Palm Springs in 2019, and also at the JTF’s Online Weeks in 2020.
The webinar will be from 3:00pm till around 5:00pm (JST) (including a 10 minute break and a chance to network with other participants and the instructor if time allows).
