Based on the combination of training in efficiency techniques and lessons learned over a 30-year career, the speaker will discuss practical innovations the professional translator can use to enhance productivity, efficiency, and income. Topics discussed will include translation process value analysis, efficient work flows, use (and misuse) of voice recognition technologies, neurobiology of hyperproductive translation work, limitations of translation memories, specific hardware and software for improving translation productivity, and the like. A lively and entertaining case study wherein efficiency techniques have been applied in Japanese-English patent translation to produce a multimillion-dollar income over the freelance career of the presenter will be discussed. While much of this material was presented in a Kansai gathering 6 years ago, the process used has undergone significant evolution since last reported. The newest process innovations will be reported.
Warren Smith
After studying efficiency techniques in semiconductor manufacturing on a Fulbright Graduate Research Fellowship in Japan while working on his master's degree in the mid-1980s, Dr. Warren Smith continued researching efficiency in operations and engineering as a doctoral student, supporting himself through freelance translation. After receiving his doctorate in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School, he decided to continue with freelance translation, given the income levels and lifestyle opportunities a well-designed freelance translation practice can afford, translating at up to 1.8 million words per year since 1999. In addition to translation work, Dr. Smith provides patent litigation support for cases involving Japanese litigants.
