Title: Translating House of Cards – what lies behind the subtitles and dub scripts

Speakers: Yuko Seo and Asako Takauchi

Abstract:

Two translators who created the Japanese subtitles and dub scripts for the hit American political drama, House of Cards, will join us to discuss their experience working on the respective forms of translation, followed by an interactive workshop segment.

Our speakers will cover the differences between subtitling and dubbing translation, and introduce the tools, dictionaries, and websites they use. With reference to specific scenes from the show, they will also reveal the difficulties arising from the recent trend to simultaneous broadcast of subtitled and dubbed versions. We will get to see examples of a dub script used for recording and subtitles for the show, and then work on our own versions of dialogue (from episodes 1 to 3, season 1) in a workshop segment.

Translators with an interest in audiovisual and entertainment translation into or out of Japanese, House of Cards fans, and many other translators should find plenty to interest them in this session. (The presentation will be in Japanese.)

Preparation: If possible, please watch House of Cards, season 1, episodes 1 to 3 in advance to give you the background to participate in the workshop.
