I was very pleased when Chiharu Hirabayashi contacted me to ask about running for the board. I’ve talked with Chiharu at length at different JAT events and am impressed with her interest in the profession, volunteer spirit, sincerity, friendliness, and knowledge. Chiharu openly shares her knowledge with JAT members and others in the translation community. Her presentation last year at PROJECT Kyoto was very well received. Chiharu has expressed interest in the board’s legal affairs position, which we are looking to fill. Although we decide our portfolios after the election, Chiharu would make an excellent legal affairs liaison because of her dedication and attention to detail. Plus, she’s a registered benrishi (patent attorney). As JAT grows, we need more leaders like Chiharu. Join me in voting for her so that JAT can be an even better association. I have no hesitation in writing this endorsement statement for the candidacy of Chiharu Hirabayashi-san in the forthcoming JAT election.
I first met Hirabayashi-san at IJET in Tokyo almost two years ago, during one of the JAT patent presentations. She was asking a pertinent question during the presentation, and contributing by being able to speak from the perspective of both a seasoned translator, and also a qualified Japanese benrishi. She was both unassuming and authoritative, with a demeanor that suited the cooperative nature of JAT.
We have kept in touch since, and meet fairly regularly. We work in the same field, and live in the same neighborhood, and Hirabayashi-san has always come across as the sort of professional, kind, and helpful person that befits a JAT officer.
As an example of Hirabayashi-san's nature, she quickly agreed to contribute a presentation for the Kyoto Project when approached at the York IJET. With no further prompting, she then efficiently prepared her presentation, sent in copies of her presentation material for prior comments, and skillfully delivered her presentation. Her presentation was well received.
Hirabayashi-san equally willingly accepted an invitation to present at the Sendai IJET, and I have no doubts that it will be also well presented and received.
In our interactions over the last two years Hirabayashi-san has always been positive and encouraging, and helpful with her advice. I know that she balances a busy professional workload as a translator and benrishi, with her duties as a mother, and yet still finds time to run the odd marathon or two each year. She strikes me as just the sort of person who would be able to contribute greatly to any JAT officer role, and I am sure that she would be a tremendous asset to JAT if elected.
I heartedly endorse Hirabayashi-san.

数年にわたり、TAC（東京活動委員会）、JATPHARMA（医薬翻訳分科会）などでJATの活動に携わった後、IJET-25実行委員としてウェブサイト作成を担当しました。 JATでの活動以外に、豪州翻訳者通訳者協会（AUSIT）、米国翻訳者協会（ATA）、クイーンズランド日本商工会議所（QJCCI）の会員でもあり、地元ブリスベンの日本人会の理事を務めたこともあります。 2年前にJATの理事になってからは、前代、前々代のウェブマスターである立花陽一郎さんやSako Eatonさんなどの協力を得ながら、ウェブサイトの問題解決や改善に努めてきました。現在は、ウェブサイトの使い勝手をさらに向上させ、会員間および協会との間のコミュニケーション方法をさらに充実させるため、専門の業者に委託し、ウェブサイトの大規模な更新を行っています。今年の半ばには完成予定です。 時期も理事に当選した暁には、ウェブマスターとして、IJETウェブサイトの更新や、電子商取引の機能の拡充に専念したいと考えています。 JATは急成長しており、数々の新しい試みが常時行われ、絶えず変化を続けています。また、翻訳・通訳の世界はグローバル化が進んでおり、ISO規格策定などの動きを先取りし迅速に対応していく必要があります。プロ集団として、JATはどのような団体になることを目指すべきなのかを、理事として今後も模索していきたいと思います。

Googleで「translator」「Japan」で検索するとJATがトップに表れるそうです。JATを訪ねてきた外国の人から「検索するとJATしか出てこない」と言われました。インターネットは翻訳者・通訳者にとって重要なので、JATのウエブサイトは良質であってほしいものです。 丸岡氏は理事としてJATのサイトをよりプロフェッショナルかつ便利にする計画を作成し、現在プロジェクトを統率しています。本計画を成功させるため丸岡氏の再選は必須です。 私が丸岡氏の仕事ぶりを知ったのは、丸岡氏がIJET-25の委員として活躍したときからでした。丸岡氏はウエブマスターという大任を果たしたのみならず、IJETに高額スポンサーを招く新しいシステムを導入することにより、IJETを大幅な黒字へ導いてくれました。 丸岡氏が2年前に理事会に入り一緒に活動してから、私は丸岡氏の優秀さに驚かされ続けています。英語でも日本語でもコミュニケーション能力が高く、新しい技術や考え方を素早く取り入れ、ウエブ開発のために外部業者を使いこなしていらっしゃいます。中国語もおできになり、法律と製薬がご専門で、豪州の大学で教鞭を取ることもあります。これに加えてウエブマスターもこなす多才ぶりなのに、威張らず気さくで、理事会にとって逸材です。 みなさんが丸岡氏に投票してくれれば、素晴らしいJATウエブサイトが出来るでしょう。

I have worked with Hideaki Maruoka on the JAT Board for two full years now and have loved every minute of it. He is proactive with all JAT-related tasks, cares deeply about the welfare of our members and the future of JAT, and gets things done straightaway. He is friendly to work with, is logical and eloquent during Board discussions, and has a great sense of humor. Hideaki comes with multiple qualifications – translator and interpreter of English, Japanese, and Chinese, knowledgeable in the fields of patent, pharma, and legal document translation, and experience teaching at the University of Queensland. As the JAT Webmaster, Hideaki has taken on the challenges of the JAT website (including the IJET site) with gusto and is diligently working to create a more user-friendly environment for members, visitors, and the JAT volunteers working behind the scenes. 「英語学習を楽しくする学校訪問プロジェクト」 このたび理事に立候補しました福岡繁樹です。私は外資系企業の人事や経営に携わった後、数年前に翻訳事務所を設立し、主に経済・人事関係と契約書の翻訳や通訳をしています。昨年はJATのISO委員として島根での国際会議に参加しました。 NPOであるJATの社会貢献活動として、私は「英語学習を楽しくする学校訪問プロジェクト」の企画を考えています。その理由は、世界の政治、経済、文化が「英語というコミュニケーション・ツール」にますます依存してきている中で、日本の現代の若者の海外および異文化コミュニケーションに対する関心度が2極分化していると感じるからです。そのボトムアップを図るため、プロフェッショナルの翻訳者・通訳者の宝庫であるJAT会員による活動を通じ、小中学生から大学生の海外および異文化コミュニケーションに対する関心を高めたいと考えます。私は小学生時代に初めて聞いたFENの楽しそうな音楽番組の内容を知りたいと思ったことが英語への興味のきっかけでした。NHKの「ようこそ先輩」のような楽しい企画で各地の学校を訪問できたら素晴らしいと思います。 海外在住のJAT会員の方々も含め、皆様にこの趣旨に御賛同いただき、各地にてこのプロジェクト活動の輪を広げていけたらJAT会員同士のつながりも強化されます。私はこの活動を通じ、現在のJAT会員と将来のJAT会員を結びつけるきっかけ作りを手掛けていきたいと考えます。

Endorsement for Shigeki Fukuoka From: Marian Kinoshita Date: May 23, 2016 Shigeki Fukuoka has been helping JAT behind the scenes for nearly two years, representing us at ISO-related meetings and the ISO conference held in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, in June 2015. ISO, or International Standards Organization, is in the midst of creating global standards for translators and interpreters and, as you can imagine, is an extremely complicated and tedious process. Mr. Fukuoka showed great patience and diligence, not only in promoting and defending the unique challenges that characterize the Japanese language and translation/interpreting industry during proceedings, but also in educating us laypeople about the ISO process and the status of the various issues that may affect us as professionals in the near future. He is very easy to work with and takes his volunteer responsibilities very seriously – a must for JAT directors. I am thrilled that he has decided to run for the JAT Board and at his interest in establishing a speaker bank - an idea the Board has been bouncing around for a few years but never had time to act upon. Part of the JAT mission is to educate those interested in becoming translators and educate clients and the public in general about the process, difficulties, and importance of our jobs. A speaker bank will serve as a system to connect educational facilities and active translators and interpreters, providing the opportunity for JAT members to educate others. With his ample experience as translator and interpreter in the finance industry, and his keen interest in bridging various cultures and promoting our profession, I think Mr. Fukuoka would be a great asset to the JAT Board and our membership.

JATの会員数は当初の約200名から800名超になりました。この規模になると理事は組織運営の知識と経験を必要とします。その一方で最近の選挙で理事の立候補者数が不足する状況になりました。 そこで理事会は「役員推薦チーム」を結成しました。今年度はウレマン・フレッド元理事、木下マリアン理事長、私が担当します。我々は様々な人に声を掛けましたが、様々な理由で立候補をためらう人もいました。 参考に平成１２年度国民生活白書「ボランティアが深める好縁」を見たところ、ハーバード大学MBA取得者の大半がNPOの理事であると知りました。 MBAは組織運営の学問です。JATでMBAを取得した会員を捜したところ、福岡繁樹さんが該当しました。福岡さんはすでにISO関連でJATに貢献した実績があります。大変優秀な方で、元総理大臣吉田茂が創設したサンケイスカラシップの厳しい選抜を経て留学し、卒業生としてお名前がWikipediaに紹介されています。軽井沢国際交流協会の理事もされています。 福岡さんはJATのためにSpeaker Bankを立ち上げる予定です。これが成功すればNPOとして我々は大いに社会貢献できるでしょう。公的な助成金も得られれば、財政が安定し、JATはさらに発展できます。 理事会は福岡繁樹氏の立候補を支持します。みなさん、福岡さんに投票してください。

I hereby announce my candidacy for a second term as a director on the JAT Board of Directors. As a freelance translator for 19 years, I believe that JAT's true value lies in the ways it connects us to one another and provides avenues for professional development. Based on this belief, I chaired the IJET-14 Organizing Committee (Dublin) and played roles on the committees for IJET-16 (Chicago) and 22 (Seattle). I also have been managing events and projects as a secondary line of business for the past 12 years and am confident this experience will continue to prove useful to JAT. I have been serving on the Board as IJET Liaison since November 2013 have decided to run for a second term to work on: (1) Continuing to build the IJET archive and document management system so that it can be used even more effectively by future IJET committees and other event committees. (2) Drafting a more detailed IJET manual to accompany the current handbook of IJET guidelines and regulations, so as to provide committees with practical operational guidance for any major event. (2) Finding ways to further improve processes: I have a knack for process analysis and improvement, and enjoy using tech tools to increase productivity. I will continue seeking ways to help JAT work smarter. I'm pleased to be playing a role in helping JAT run the many different types of events that make membership so valuable and I will strive to continue that work in a second term as a JAT Board Member. I have been working with Stacey Jehlik on the JAT Board for two years and am extremely grateful for her strong guidance, support, and organizational skills. She has been instrumental in gathering and organizing JAT documents of all kinds into a central location, ensuring easy retrieval for any new member of the Board and various JAT committees for years to come. She has proven herself to be our resident Basecamp guru, providing helpful training and problem-solving when needed. She has often helped me in my role as JAT president come to decisions and take the lead on issues when I seem to be wavering. Stacey looks at the overall picture in a non-biased, non-emotional fashion, a great aid in the decision-making process! I find she has been blessed with a generous amount of patience for and confidence in people working as a team, watching over them and ready to give advice or information as needed, without a tight grip on the reigns. This attitude fits perfectly with the JAT style of operations – encouraging members to instigate and organize activities independently, under the caring cover of the JAT umbrella. Stacey has been a valuable member of the Board and JAT would benefit greatly from another two years of her contributions.

I joined the board of directors at the end of 2015 to fill a vacancy. As membership officer, I have been responsible for responding to queries received from existing and prospective members regarding JAT membership, assisting those who have questions regarding the payment of membership dues, and catering to special requests such as those received from members requiring receipts. While I was initially bewildered by the different databases and banking systems involved, thanks to the support of the rest of the board I now have a good idea of how everything works and would like to think that I have been able to respond to membership enquiries in a timely manner. If elected to serve a full term, I hope to become more heavily involved in the board’s ongoing efforts to further automate and simplify the membership process, and to implement new initiatives aimed at signing up more new members and ensuring that existing members are satisfied with the benefits afforded by JAT membership.

トバイアス・ラッシュブルック氏は長年日本翻訳者協会の会員として種々の会合に参加はしていましたが、表立って委員を務めるなどはありませんでした。が、昨年10月、理事会で欠員が出た際、快く補欠理事の責務を受けていただき、今年1月に理事として就任してくださいました。会員担当理事であった私の職務を引き継ぎ、この5ヶ月会員担当理事として責務を果たしていただいております。理事会の討議にも積極的に参加し、理事会のあり方などにも非常に有効な意見を述べるなど、今ではなくてはならない存在です。 理事として本協会に貢献しつづけていただきたいと願い、推薦いたします。

I met Toby about three years ago at a JAT event soon after he moved to Tokyo and was impressed with his dedication to his career and the translation industry in general. After a few years of getting settled in the Kanto area, he agreed to join the JAT Board this past January to fill an empty position. He has gradually assumed the role of Membership Officer over the past half year, and is now a confident member of the Board, responding to queries from members and the public, revising FAQs for our website, and actively contributing to the decision-making process. Toby is easy to work – a friendly and capable addition to Board discussions. (Members of the Board are, in general, very busy people handling full time work and family duties in addition to JAT responsibilities, so patience and a pleasant demeanor are welcome traits in our predominantly online-based communications.) I feel like Toby has just gotten his feet wet is ready to go full-force, a helpful and timely asset to the JAT Board as brand new members join the team.
