Join us for a conversation with the winners of the 8^th JLPP International Translation Competition, Rebecca Gade and Lisa Wilcut. With moderator Madelein Shimizu (who was shortlisted for the prize), Rebecca and Lisa will share their experiences with the contest, offer advice, and talk about the realities of being an aspiring literary translator.

With the JAT translation contest just around the corner, this webinar is the perfect opportunity to learn from talented translators about how to produce your best work when it really counts.

Speakers

Rebecca Gade

After a decade of teaching, Rebecca took the plunge into full-time translation in late 2022. The same year, she won the 19th JAT Translation Contest for New and Aspiring Translators, followed soon after by the grand prize in the 8th JLPP Translation Competition. Currently, she works in-house learning the ropes of patent and legal translation, but hopes to pursue literary translation on the side.

Lisa Wilcut

Lisa Wilcut is a Yokohama-based translator, writer, and editor. Her entry in the 8^th JLPP International Translation Competition won second place, and her translations include I Can Open It For You by Yoshitake Shinsuke. She is currently translating a middle-grade novel and a handful of picture books.

About the JLPP Contest

The Japanese Literature Publishing Project (JLPP) was founded to promote awareness and appreciation of contemporary Japanese literature. The first JLPP International Translation Competition was launched in 2010, with entries for the 9th Competition closing in June 2024. Winners will be announced in January 2025.

About the JAT Translation Contest

The JAT contest for new and aspiring Japanese <> English translators is an annual event hosted by JAT, open to anyone with less than three years’ experience as a professional translator. The 21^st contest kicks off on October 1, with entries being accepted until October 31. This event will be presented in English.

Will the event be recorded?

Yes. This event will be recorded and all registrants will have access to the recording for two weeks after the event. The event will also be archived to the JAT members’ area for members to access.

Is the event only for JAT members?
